Western-style kapa wear now on display at historic Chamberlain House

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – New artifacts are now on display at Hawaiian Mission Houses next to Kawaiahao Church.
Among the items: western-style clothing made from native kapa.
The materials for this Holoku Kapa and Kapa Cape are the bark of the wauke plant and fibers from the olona plant.
This was a common style in the early 19th century during a transitional time when Hawaiians were blending European culture into their fashion.
The Holoku was donated by descendants of W.P. Alexander in 1932 and the Cape was a bequest of Ruth E. Pogue in 1970.
You can see the new artifacts at the historic Levi Chamberlain House. Click here for more information on Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site & Archives.
